CIS Architecture:
Documenting the Student Registration Process at a University
INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE + UX RESEARCH — University of Utah Department of Undergraduate Studies – 2023
This project involved conducting an audit of the student registration process at the University of Utah. Through a series of interviews with upper administration and students, and website documentation and analysis, I was able to design a presentation and rough draft proposal for a simplified student experience with campus information services.
THE IDEAL REGISTRATION
I first outlined the ideal student registration flow— making the most simplified version of an often convoluted process. After outlining the basics of the process, I designed the information architecture of an efficient student services website, minimizing page transfers and consolidating actions. Within this new architecture, I diagramed a user flow for a student utilizing the “quick registration” feature.
THE CURRENT REGISTRATION
I then presented the current student registration flow at a high level— displaying the extensive architecture of only one component of the Campus Information Services website. Contrasting the ideal registration, I highlighted the complicated path required to register for one class in the fastest way possible.
INFORMATION NEEDED TO REGISTER
Next, I defined the various pages and locations that students can turn to in order to find the specific information needed to register for a class. Within those locations, issues arise, both internally, and off the page, that further complicated the registration process.
PROPOSAL FOR CHANGE
After documenting the current registration process and analyzing its flaws and structure, I suggested an optimized system in which required information is accessible in tandem with actions necessary for registration. Finally, I designed a very basic UI concept to illustrate what the ideal registration flow would look like client-facing, and to provide upper administration with a reference when seeking out new student information systems.

REQUIRED INFORMATION
- Class description and contents
- Class time and date availability
- Class prerequisites
- Requirements fulfilled by the class
- Class registration code
